Welcome to Life on the Pale Blue Dot, a blog with a focus on
sharing the benefits and overall beauty of the natural world while also
encouraging others to spend more time in the great outdoors. My name is Emily
Reyes and I’m hopelessly in love with studying the marvels of nature, ranging
from the depths of the ocean to the furthest stretches of the known universe. I
graduated from Daytona State College (DSC) with my Associates of Science in
Environmental Science Technology in the Spring of 2016. I’m currently finishing
the required courses to receive my Associates of Arts degree from DSC before
moving back to my home state of New York to work towards my Bachelors of Science
in Environmental Science. I've always had an intimate connection to nature, spending the majority of my youth wandering around pine forests, playing in the snow in winter and rolling through the grass in summer. On any clear night it wouldn't be unusual to see me atop the roof of my childhood home, gazing at the sky of distant suns.
I’ve named this blog after a book, Pale Blue Dot, written by
one of my favorite authors/scientists, Carl Sagan. The title of his book refers
to the picture to the left which is actually a picture of the Earth from 3.7
million miles away, taken by space probe Voyager 1 as it left our solar system.
This is one of the most powerful pictures I have ever seen because from here, at
the edge of the solar system, one can see no boarders, no differences among our
species, no meaningless violence or ongoing environmental protection battles.
From here, we simply appear as “a mote of dust, suspended in a sun beam”. With
this in mind, I hope that my blog can help people better appreciate nature and
understand it’s sacredness when compared to the cold vastness of space. The
Earth is not inherited from our elders but rather borrowed from our children.
Thank you for joining me on this wonderful adventure that is Life on the Pale
Blue Dot.
